The Shields Up! website (http://www.kendrick.org/shields-up/default.aspx) is a very valuable tool that I used in gathering many state shield designs. Interesting to note that they include Puerto Rico's former shield, which was changed in the past decade. And it was by far the ugliest state shield in the US and its territories. About as much appeal as a turd in a punchbowl. Funny, that's what it looks like. Ugh! Thankfully, someone there had some sort of sense, and went for a simpler design, based on the state emblem. I made these makeovers prior to my discovery of their new shields. They are somewhat similar, but with a little more color, and make use of the state emblem:
