The southern portion (belt) from Perth Amboy to Bridgewater is such a mess in both directions. Its not the road itself, but the ramps that need to be fixed. Some of the traffic is inevitable considering the number of people travelling in the area. Some of the short exit ramps with lights, however, cause the traffic on the highway to slow even more around certain exits (like River Rd).
In an unrelated matter, I hate how the DOT in NJ wastes money on smaller projects that have no long term results. They should spend more money to upgrade highways to freeways or at least remove some of the lights to reduce sitting traffic. Not only is completely stopped traffic worse for the environment, but its worse for the roads. On US-202 between Bridgewater and Readington, they have closed a lane to pave the break down lane (a problem which could have been solved by patching a few spots. the place where they do overpatch is the roadway itself. there is one spot that's getting worse and worse because they patched a noticable bump in the road that now has tire ruts across it)
